Well, I have been taking lessons for a while and I had the same problem. Try telling him to lock his hip and explode,and also taking a short step. But the most important thing is adjusting your back, not the knees. Most kids tend to want to bend the knees. It's all in the back. After going down or up with your back you should then end your swing standing up straight. I hope this helps again, it will take time. My coach insisted on me buying a tee and adjusting it to different heights. It really helps.
