The position of the bat should be parallel to the ground. Some hitters I have worked with prefer a little bit of an upward angle, but I think it is important to try to be as level as possible. No matter where a hitter's bat is when he or she sets up, the bat eventually has to level out. All hitters (Griffey,Sosa,McGwire, Suzuki,etc) all end with a level bat at impact. Why not get it there sooner and let the rotation and torque of the body generate power as opposed to a long looping swing which is often difficult to control, even for the best hitters.
