To me, if you take the cos of that angle x the power applied, you are deducting the amount of force you are putting on the ball, thus, not hitting the ball as hard or as far. Also, the backspin will only add lift to the ball, not speed...as I have heard coaches saying.

If you hit the top, it can only go down.

If you swing in an X plane, you only have a small percentage chance of actually hitting any part of the ball.

The bat must travel in the plane of the ball. You hit just <b>under</b> the centerline in order to impart spin. If you hit dead center, the ball will travel like a knuckleball.
