You need to figure out some math. A bat is about 32-34 inches long (if you minus where your top hand grips the bat you lose about 4 inches) and your arm from elbow to wrist is about 12 - 16 inches long for a total of 44 - 50 inches long. The outside of the plate if you are standing 12 inches from the plate is only 30 inches away.
I know that the hands are above the ball and this takes some distance away but you still have lots of plate coverage with a tucked elbow. That is just based on pure numbers.
I am not sure what you mean by adjusting your swing because I am adjusting my timing to hit an outside pitch not my swing. One swing with compensation for timing the pitch. Watch the best hitters and see them do exactly this.
