During the HR derby tonight, ESPN showed a clip of Gonzalez describing his swing. "I open up a lot more with my back foot in the batter's box; it's turned more toward the pitcher so my hips are freed up a little bit more..".

Some of the best hitters, according to average, in baseball history hit very few homeruns. (That guy from Minnesota who won a ton of batting titles and whos name I can't think of now is a great example. What about Pete Rose, Huh?)

Remember they know where the ball is going to be. The guy pitching is "their guy." During the season they are facing pitchers who are trying to keeping the ball out of their power slot by moving the ball around, changing speeds, throwing breaking balls and generally just trying to mess them up.

> joe a...the guy from mimmesota was rod carew.......also there was another guy from minnesota who hit a ton of home runs: harmon killebrew.........anyway, i can see that you made some effort to try to put some thought into your post, and for that you should be commended.........you are right, hitters do things different in a homerun derby and they do have a pitcher whose job is to throw them meatballs, not to get them out.....congratulations on that very perceptive observation.....as far as homeruns being the ultimate in hitting...........well..........i never heard of a "base hit" derby..........in football a touchdown is more exciting than a field goak, in basjetball a 3-pointer is more exciting than a free throw, and in baseball a homerun is more exciting than a double.........but perhaps, given our strong respect and admiration for each other, we can disagree on that point and still be friends......respectfully, grc....
