I almost never used to swing at the first pitch and during that time I prided myself on going deep into counts (3-2, 2-2, etc.). This year I began to swing at the first pitch more because of advice I had been given. I find that I am no longer going deep into counts and my walk total is way down. What is your perspective on the first pitch, especially when seeing a new pitcher for the first time?

> There are ways to look at it,1st how well you can handle hitting behind in the count,do youchange your swing more defensive as soon as you get behind.Also how much are you personaly gaining by taking a pitch,are you learning from every pitch or just standing there.I believe now in taking the 1 st pitch of a game and hitting nothing I have'nt seen,Also don't swing at curve balls with no strikes unless your looking for it and can hit them well.when you go to the plate, have a plan and a pitch to execute it if its not there let it go even if it's a strike.I was considered a pretty good 1st ball hitter but I would stand in the circle between innings and get my timing even if I was up fourth that inning alot goes into being prepared to hit the 1st pitch but overall the more pitches you see the better your timing should be.
