My understanding of a "level" swing would be the bat makes a 90 degree angle with your spine. Your bat should be perpendicular to your spine. Even though it would not be level with the ground (which most probably think is a level swing) it is level with your body and can still produce backspin on the ball. It's all based on your spine and not the ground. I think thats where people are misled when they are told to swing level at a young age.
