Hi Mike,
A lot of coaches tell players to get their back elbow up, because they've heard other coaches say it or they see the good pro hitters doing it. Unfortunately, they have no idea of the mechanic needed by the batter, when he has his elbow up. It is an advanced technique that most coaches don't understand, but is discussed in this site as top hand torque. Just understand that in using this technique, the first movement is to get that elbow down when you start to swing.
