level shoulders

How important is it to keep your shoulders level? Recently, I was starting with my front shoulder a little higher than my back shoulder, not on purpose, just because it was that way. When I was not hitting to good, I noticed my shoulders. So I leveled them out and now I am definitely hitting better. Could this be right? How can this change your swing?
