It also depends on what type of batter you have up at the plate. In a perfect world you would and could have everyone hitting back side with running on 1st. But if you have pwr hitters up and the pitch is middle in. You should't take his bat out of his hand. A line shot in to left center will get the running to 2nd and sometimes depending on the outfield to 3rd. I agree that all batters should work on situation hitting. Hitting behind the runner at 1st and 2nd. Work on driving ball deep with runner at 3rd with 1 or no outs. Playing smart baseball!!!
