In laymans terms, the fastest way from here to there is a straight line. This is a linear thought process.

But if a spring were attached to the linear function it would be possible to launch the object faster. The spring component is the rotation which has an elastic principle to it. The key is to create the elastic function. Without the elastic function, the rotation would be a slower swing because the straight line is naturally the shorter distance.
