What about soft focusing on the pitcher's hat before he starts his wind up, then and soon as he starts his wind up look at his face (hat or belt) then, as the pitcher separates his hands, look to the release area? I am going to try what you said about fine focusing at the release window when the pitcher starts his windup. (but first, soft focus somewhere on the pitcher's body)
