With regard to Michael Young, he is a very good young hitter. He is a rotational hitter who uses the whole field. But his swing appears to be somewhat restricted which is probably because he makes a conscious effort to hit the ball back through the middle (a somewhat inside out swing at times) rather than get full extension.

On your second point Ryne Sandburg used the knee movement you described in order to facilitate hip action.
