(See Dusty Baker's book and or video "You can Teach Hitting".)

You hit a high pitch the same way you hit every other pitch and that is with your hands above the ball. Your top hand must punch up to get the barrel up high enough to get to the ball.

You tell hitters to hit it where it is pitched so their chances of getting a hit has a higher percentage. As the ball gets higher you have more of a problem hitting it to the opposite field because you can not get your hands high enough at the beginning of the swing to get the barrel to the ball and by the way if you do tomahawk the ball your hands need to roll over in order to do this which also causes the barrel to angle so the ball is pulled so you still would pull the ball (experiment with this and you will see what I am talking about).

They throw change ups away and low because you need to let the ball travel to hit it back in the stance so you can hit it the other way. High and in hard and low and away slow is the hardest combination of pitches to through off a hitters timing.

I do agree with him that if it came down to making contact some time and not making contact at all that some time is better then not. I just think that you can be trained to hit it the same way by getting your hands above the ball if you can learn to reconize the pitch soon enough. I believe sometimes this is the problem that the player is not taught how to reconize the pitch soon enough and then they are always late.

I will on occasion do this to make a point about how high the hands can get and where to hit the ball but not to practice hitting a ball. Players have enough trouble hitting all the strikes let alone hitting the balls also.

Manny hit a homerun off his shoe laces but are you going to practice hitting the ball this low to say that you can. Work on the higher percentage locations so that you have a higher percentage in the batting average.

> > ...Dave p my concern on this issue is that you keep talking about the hands adjusting to the high pitch when the major cause of the adjustment for up and down pitches has nothing to do with the hands,We have written pages and analyzed many clips of hitters looking low and adjusting up here on this site as well as shawns site and have broke it down, the bats got to swing relativly 90 degrees to the spine as jack has pointed out in clips ,I made a basic short explanation on this above.Yes the chin high pitch is an exception but you say that every ball is hit with the hands above the barrel and it is not that is my point about putting the tee chin high.I guess I should ask out front of what when you say the ball has to be hit out front],the plate the back knee ,front knee.Anyways there are many pitches above the belt[high pitch]that are hit every game in the ml that go to opposite field, and the one thing that all these balls are hit out in front of is the bat,is that what you refer to when you say out front. It is a given that any balls hit to oppo field [and their are alot every day ]that the barrel is behind the hands at least a little so the bat cannot be to far out front of the plate [if this is your out front of]at contact because the hands would be even more out front and if a guy stands toward the back of the box ,well thats stretching things a bit much.If you want to create hitters a drill to adjust to high pitches then try the 2 tire drill or modify the bag drill but the hands do what the bodies adjustments allow it to do and if the body does not know how to adjust 1st then you may end up with balls in the strike zone trying to be poorly tomahawked.

> I disagree with your assesment about "the hands do what the bodies adjustments allow it to do". The body will adjust to what the hands have to do. If the hands need to adjust up the body will go up, if the hands need to adjust down the body will adjust down. The body will aid the hands in order to complete the task.

> A wide reciever going for a high pass does not think get my feet under me , bend and jump. All he thinks is get my hands to the ball and the body responds with what it needs to do.

Graylon,I will agree with you on this point, but my point in the conversation is it is the adjustment that the body does that allows the hands to get to the ball, they dont get there correctly without the adjustment,it is the subconscious ingrained swing program for that pitch that takes over when the mind decides where the hands have to go.I wish I was young enough to go out and still hit regularly enough to see how I feel about the idea of barrel awareness, this is what I think I used many years ago when the entire body was on autopilot to get the barrel where it needed to be on time.
