Bat speed for any given individual is a function of swing mechanics and physical strength. Bat quickness (ability to accelerate) is more a function of the individual’s speed of muscle twitch. Two individuals with identical (good rotational) mechanics and physical strength, but with different muscle twitch abilities should be capable of nearly identical bat speed. But the one who possesses slower muscle twitch will naturally adjust his timing to begin swinging sooner in order to afford himself the time to get the bat accelerated. He will suffer not from lack of bat speed but rather the handicap of not being able to see the ball as long before committing to a swing.
How correctable is slow muscle twitch? I know physical conditioning may help some, but muscle twitch is ultimately governed by genetics. Does anyone know a way to speed up a slow muscle twitch individual who is in good physical condition and already possesses good mechanics? I’d be interested in suggestions.
