> i forgot one more thing and this may be the most important.the bat and the ball.in ted's book he estimates that the sweet spot of the bat is 3 and 1/2 inches long at flat contact(correct me if i;m wrong it;s late and i can;t finf the book) and the ball only has 3/4 of an inch of a sweet spot.so not only most you use the good wood on the bat but you have to hit the best part of the ball.i live in philly and we have chase utley at second base and boy does he have power and he isn;t a big guy,he's hit balls further then jim thome a real big guy in baseball.the guy utley is amazing he;s had mnay mulltiple hr games this year remember he's a second basemen their not suppose to hit for power, unless you have a guy like jeff kent playing out of position who really unlike utley isn't a true second baseman.i wondered way and common sense says a little guy like utley iosn;t going to swing as fast as the strong thome but he had somthing and that somthing is he always hits the best part of the ball with the best part of the bat and like i mentioned in the other thread he doesn;t have a great follow through kind of cuts the swing off after he's made contact which again goes to show you the follow through isn;t as important as lau has indicated.most people take this for granted the sweet spots on the bat on ball, ted didn;t and as much as i have reaed his book i always have seemed to take that part of the book for granted.think about it when you practicing your hitting does your coach ever say your not getting the sweet spot on the ball.in soft toss, batting practice, hitting off a tee no one ever mentions it.yet when you really lay into the ball with the sweet spot and hit a homer the feel is perfect and the ball just jetisons off the bat.take it as a extreme way like this the strikout is the epitome of not getting the best part of the bat on the best part of the ball ball you missed everthing, the hr is ther epitome of everything going right espeacially a big mac or kingmanm or a mantle hr
yep, making contact is the most important thing.
