I will agree with you in the sense that hitting instruction at the lower levels (little league/city league/travel ball can be atrocious to put it mildly...why some hit and other do not is complex.

It is far easier for a 'hitting instructor' to apply his way and overload a young hitter with mumbo-jumbo then to take what the hitter does well and work off that...I see it all the time, kid takes two hacks and the 'instructor' starts in with 15 different things...many of my one on one teaching sessions don't really involve swinging the bat. Before instruction can be giving you have to know what your dealing with, what do they know about hitting and their own swing...getting to the heart of a problem takes a keen eye, and patience to NOT say whatever comes to mind...one real good piece of coaching said with the right words goes 10 times further the ten pieces of marginal suggestions.

Gag.

Give me the names of all those great European hitters you've developed.

Well, hundreds of thousands, if not millions take up baseball each year as first time little leaguers. Their coaches have been influenced by the pros teachings for years. And that is what they teach. Yet, of the hundred's of thousands that take up baseball this year, around 20 will be playing in the big leagues 20 years from now. Now that's a hell of a track record.
