Thanks for your help guys but it was actually a simple mechanical flaw that was causing it. My brother was rotating before he got his rear elbow in the relaxed or tucked position by his side. So as he was rotating the path that the bat was taking to the ball was down and away in front of his body. That's what was causing him to be out of balance.

I can't believe I didn't remember that. It's time to start keeping a hitting journal.
