Dave,

It's a guessing game without seeing a clip of him.

One thing to check is his back elbow leading the hands into the strike zone?

Does he have a good connection of the lead arm through the swing, during rotation?

Does he start the swing prior to rotation. Does his elbow start to lower prior to rotation?

Is there to much up and down movement with the arms. Instead of the swing being around the spine (posture in the swing), does he make adjustments by lowering the back arm (or shoulder) and raising the front arm?
