I think there might be a mechanical advantage to keeping the hands as a unit closer the the rear shoulder. take the ice skater analogy: the tighter the skater keeps the hands,arms and legs to the torso the faster the skater is able to rotate. i think the same aplies to the hitter. keep it tight until the back forearm can release perpendicular to the plate. more rotational speed will have been reached at that point. does that make sense???
