I am no expert, But my son has been using this method for over 5 years. He will sometimes hit the ball off of the handle. What I have observed is that it only happens when his stance are closed more than slightly. This causes him to extend early. the reasoning is simple. When the hitter is closed and his front foot makes contact with the ground that is the moment the rotation begins. Therefore his swing is complete and extension has begun before the bat gets through the hitting zone. When he is perpendicular to the pitcher (not closed) his extension happens at impact.
