A bend in the lead arm is only nessary if a hitter is standing too close to the plate or if he is swinging at a pitch out of the strike zone inside.

A hitter will be able to remain extended and still keep the ball in fair territory as long as he isn't standing to close to the plate or trying to hit a pitch practically heading for his hip.
