Albert Pujols' swing plane

Posted by: Jesse () on Wed Jun 29 10:04:28 2005

I've watched him a lot over the past two seasons and always admired his swing, but this year I paid even more attention and noticed that, unlike most major leaguers, ESPECIALLY power hitters, Albert swings on top of the ball, instead of under it (and then eventually up, hence the uppercut of your typical power-swing). Usually singles hitters/leadoff men employ this method as a way of making more consistant contact, and while Albert's plane is not as dramatically and obviously downward, he clearly angles to hit the top half of the ball, then quickly rises in his follow through, almost like a V. Has anyone else noticed this?
