foul balls

it is an interesting discussion regarding foul balls and how to incorporate that into a batter's ability. My take on it is that a bastter who has hit a foul ball is actually "lucky" in the sense that it was not in fair play, and LIKELY would have been an out.

therefore, I suspect there may be a correlation between number of foul balls hit one year by a batter and whether or not his avearge goes up or down the next year.

Does anybody know of any study like this? Is there any place we can get data on number of foul balls hit by batters (or pitchers for that matter) ?

thanks
John
