question

I stumbled across this site. I have a silly question.
A batter hitting in MLB. How long does batter have in deciding to swing at a pitch. It seems so imposible to me how a guy can see ball coming out of the pitchers hand and have the time to decide to swing or not. I am asking a physics question. From the time of release to the plate is aprox how long? How qick is the swing? How long of a look to react to a pitch or not?
