Teaching my 7 year old to hit

I am trying to figure out the best way to teach my 7 yo son to hit. He just waves the bat at every ball thrown his way and when he does hit the ball (usually an accident of the ball actually hitting the bat), he stops the swing as soon as he makes contact. Any suggestions?
