Cage hitting and live game hitting are two different animals. Still different yet would be live hitting in a non-game situation. Biggest difference: People are trying to get you out during a game.

Help your boys by getting them to understand the difference between practice (cage) and the real thing. Also, emphasize that their work in the cage is to perfect their swing mechanics and develop consistency. You do not mention their ages in your post, but there could be a fear factor associated with facing an actual pitcher. Lastly, find a local batting instructor with good references to work with them on live hitting.
