Re: Back Elbow

Posted by: Jack Mankin (MrBatspeed@aol.com) on Thu Jan 11 18:55:46 2001

>>>Hi. Jack, what is the correct position (if there is one) of the back elbow in the stance? My coach (a former minor leaguer) says it should not be elevated even slightly and that the middle knuckles should line up together, because if it is elevated, it will cause an "uppercut" in the swing, and possibly cause a looping swing. But I feel that the slightly elevated back elbow helps me add more torque to the bat, plus it is more comfortable. What are your thoughts on the subject? Thanks, Joe C. <<<

Hi Joe C

Most of the information that coaches receive are from instructional books or videos, which promote the type of mechanics that your coach is relaying to you. He is doing what he thinks is best by teaching the principles that he was taught. --- In this case, your coach is mistaken. Elevating the rear elbow is not detrimental to your swing. Lining up the middle knuckles can be detrimental to your swing and may cause the problems with the plain of the swing. --- In my opinion, publishers of faulty information are more blameworthy than your coach.
