adjusting to off speed or soft throwers

My 14 year old son has a great swing against hard throwers but struggles to keep the same bat speed against "soft-throwers". I have been told that one drill that might work is to alternate hard then soft throws, letting him know whats's coming, to develop muscle memory.
Any thoughts or other advice would be appreciated.
