He should sprint often.
Also, work for about ten yards taking steps about as long as his foot, but getting his knees up to running height and moving his legs as fast as possible. Sort of like running in place but with some forward motion so he doesn't lean backwards. Pump arms like running, trying to get as many steps down in the ten yards as fast as possible.
We used to do this in track to shorten our sprinting stride length and speed up our leg cycle. The idea was to run "on top" of our legs rather than letting our weight rise and fall with each stride.
