slo-pitch swing

should a slo-pitch swing be more of a level swing or an upward swing. Most people say you should hit the ball square so I figure a more upward swing would be better plus with a level swing you would have to hit the ball absolutely perfect(little early you'll pop it up and little late you'll ground out). Any thoughts??
