Good question, not a common one but, a good one.
Competitive or not, is not the issue here at all.
So, certainly not to undermine his coach, whom I'm assuming has all the best intentions for the kids anyway. But, if your son likes doing it and, is doing it on his own, then let him. I mean it could be riding his bike up and down the driveway a hundred times or, something else excessively. If he's not doing anyone any harm, esp. himself, then let him swing away. Eventually, he'll stop is my guess :) If you, the parent, knowing your son the best, feels that it's a little too much, then back him off. If you're really concerned about his physical well being, ask his pediatrician.
