This open top hand allows the bat to be supported but not allow significant forces to be transmitted to the bat. Even simpler would be a one arm swing, but this way allows the bat to be supported and thus easier to swing. >>

Good question. Sure, it's possible. I know there are actually instructors out there who advocate practicing one arm swings with both top and bottom hand. (For example, Dr. Bragg Stockton and his Skills and Drills series of videos.) My understanding is that some guys can eventually hit the ball nearly as far one handed, with either hand, as they can two handed.

Although I agree that it should be possible to do it with the top hand, I'm a big believer in not doing it that way. I think of the swing as a bottom hand swing, but that's not physics, just my own personal belief system.

The point of my exercise here wasn't to advocate anything, just to point out that top hand and bottom hand torque - which can't be applied in a one handed swing by Jack's definition - isn't nearly as important as the circular hand path (whip effect). The experiments by rql below are clear demonstrations of my assertions, and are totally consistent with Adair, Nyman, etc.
