Thank you for the great response! I think your real-world experience with the swinging down approach and your evaluation of it's upside/downside hits the nail on the head.

I have often stated that too many people are/have taught this approach for some of it not to have filtered into the higher levels of the game, including the major leagues.

Your assessment that it is a viable approach, but not the best approach says it all for me.
