if the key is to simply generate batspeed, then would a lighter bat be more beneficial to swing.

The answer to this question is not an absolute, nor is the answer to many of the questions presented. The key is to find what combination works most often under a variety of circumstances. As pointed out in this forum, bat speed can be improved by proper technique. Therefore a heavier bat with proper technique should yield better results than a lighter bat with average or poor technique. In some instances, a batter who is consistently out in front might benefit from a heavier bat to make up for his early swing mechanics. The opposite is true for a hitter who is late. Physical strength and athletic ability along with intellingence also contribute to what the hitter should try. Methods have to be altered occasionally for different conditions. Most older players have to make some adjustments as they age to make up for a loss in flexibility and or strength in some cases. Your theory has a good premis, but may not necessarily be what you want to do in order to achieve your goal.
