Shortening swing

My son is having having difficulty consistently hitting against older/faster pitchers.

Coach recommened he choke up and shorten his swing. He did this and hit a beautiful line drive (which unfortunatly was caught).

What is the benefit of shortening a swing? My son tends to be ahead of the ball.
