i believe you are correct...i don't want to beat a dead horse but i think this is consistent with my "bat cock thing"....if the bat (at start of stride) is vertical & no cocking taking place, by launch position the hands (and knob) will be in no position to go anywhere except, as you point out, forward...thus, no chp but instead linear...furthermore, there is no "torque position" (i use epstein's term as a matter of convenience to describe the hips being rotated 15-30 degrees by heel plant)....and, of course, more of a tendency to contact at full x-t, rather than the more desirable "L" in the top arm...and of course, this in turn resulting in less hip rotation (and consequently less shoulder rotation)....
