Bat length/weight rules of thumb

Posted by: Larry (lr262@columbus.rr.com) on Sat Feb 14 11:55:06 2004

I'm coaching a team of 12-yr olds.
Looking for advice on bat length & weight,
especially with regard to younger players who
aren't particularly strong yet.

Seemingly, the "linear" mechanics (throwing the hands) would seem place a premium on using a shorter, lighter bat. Do the "rotational" mechanics, using larger muscle groups, make it possible to use a somewhat longer, heavier bat,
with a larger sweet spot?

Specifically: A longer bat should have a larger "sweet spot"; but seemingly it also creates a longer arc, and requires faster rotation. Have you studied the trade-offs?
