Dave,

I think it’s a personal preference. Could even relate to how your feet are normally oriented. One of the main functions of the front foot in the swing is to provide resistance with the ground. Mike’s rubber band analogy does not work well without resistance. This is why I think much beyond 45 degrees won’t work well: the feet are not in a good position to provide resistance. The feet are in a very good position to provide resistance in the closed mode.

I put the clips together from video of ESPN/Hr Derby/Baseball Videos. Try to look for unusual angles that I hope will help provide insight into the workings of the swing.
