Though I am generally against "punishment" for errors, this doesn't sound too bad. Though it all depends on how it is administered. If push-ups or laps is the standard penalty and it's given out in reasonable (age appropriate) portions, without derision of the player, then I would think it's ok. But it really is dependent on the situation, the players and the coach. Also, what might be appropriate for boys might not for girls.

If the penalties take over the practice or the kids aren't really sure what they did to deserve this, then that coach is not coaching.
