Jane,

If you look at most of the clips closely (gonzalez01) your will see that the foot lands slightly closed and on the ball of the foot. Some hitters are slightly more closed (or open)than others. From there the foot will pivot to a more open position to accommodate rotation.

No stride is certainly a good way to practice when learning rotation. More difficult to master against live pitching. I think the fact that very few major league hitters use it is an indication it is not the magic bullet that will turn you into a good hitter.
