Your idea of powering with your top hand creates swings that roll over during the contact phase of the hit. If the top hand pushes past(not excellerated past the bottom hand with bottom hand pull = centrifical force) then the hand will want to roll over. Try to punch forward with your power hand and keep that hand from rolling over (means that the thumb goes higher then the wrist). The only way of doing this is by upper cutting with that power hand which is the same in your swing.

The stronger the top hand and less you use the bottom hand the earlier the hitter will roll over. I see this a lot with right handed hitters who are also pitchers (especially in softball). They can hit the ball hard but only really early in the swing before they roll over.
