Hi Doug

The follow through occurs after contact and therefore has no impact on the flight of the ball. It’s main function is to allow the bat’s momentum to coast out. --- I would consider the follow through and the finish of the swing to be two different parts of the swing. The swing occurs till contact – the follow through occurs after contact.
