starting point of hands?

Posted by: OF4 () on Wed Jul 19 12:49:01 2000

When a batter gets into the box, I am curious to know what is a good set point for the hands in regards to being close to the body or far away from the body? I feel I used to hit in a neutral position not too close but not too far away. I have a kid who is a varsity caliber athlete and 16 that doesn't get around on the ball quick enough. Could it possibly be because the players hands are quite a bit away from the body? They almost hang over the plate (the player still will hit the ball where it is pitched...they don't pull everything). Or does the set-up vary from individual to individual and there are a lot of good hitters that start in unorthodox positions but still hit well...Jay Buhner for one?
