Slow pitchers

My father tells me that when facing a slower pitcher, to not change anything about my swing but to just wait longer untill I start my swing. Is this the best thing to do about a slow pitcher, or is ther some technique to slowing down the process of the swing? If there is a way to slow down the process, will there still be the same bat speed?
