I told him in the middle of the tryout to only swing when it was his turn and to forget all the warm up swings. He must have swung over 100 times before he had his turn to bat.

Is it harmful-double work on the the right shoulder to throw right and bat lefty? What shoulder is being used more when batting as a lefty the right or left shoulder?

Ed,

Lefty hitters should use the left shoulder slightly more than the right but this site may disagree. You should not harm your shoulders when swinging if swinging correctly. Good luck!
