yeah that's wrong. Pushing off the ground is way wrong. You get most of our power from your abs/hips and thier rotation. The no step thing is just a (non-effective in my opinion) way to try to keep a hitter more stable. A stride is mainly a timing mechanism but it is still very important. I'd tell your son to use a stride, but you don't want to argue with the coach. If he had to use a no stride, I'd tell him to get a wider stance to make up for the lack of stride and maybe try to sneak a small stride that the coach won't care about
