George,

To wind up or load the swing up means to build up controllable momentum. This controllable momentum is either continued into the strike, or it is shut down for the balls.

Without the controlled momentum build up (load), the hitter has less batspeed and power to impact the ball.

Objects (bats) at rest tend to stay at rest my friend.
