I hear coaches advising hitters to bring their hands to the ball. What do they mean by this? If I took it literally, I would have some hurt fingers! I'm assuming it's good advice and would like to know how to execute it.

Actually, it's most likely bad advice. It will most likely cause a linear hand path.
