Weak grounders to short from a right handed batter usually mean trying to pull an outside pitch. I would suggest teaching him to let the ball get deep and drive the ball to right field. After he gains the confidence of hitting ropes to right and recognizing those middle out pitches, he will be able to easily turn on the middle in "meat" and drive them into left. Next BP throw him away and get him "mashing" to right - he (and you) will see a big difference come game time.
